The United Nations has reportedly declared July 7 as “World Amotekun Day,” in recognition of the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun’s, role in regional security.
This declaration, announced by Ambassador Dr. Markwili Mgbara of the International Association of World Peace Advocates (an organization with UN consultative status), highlights Amotekun’s efforts in combating crime in Nigeria’s Southwest.
Key aspects of this recognition include:
* International Affiliation: The Ondo State Amotekun Corps is now internationally affiliated with the UN as a trained security unit—the first state-owned security agency in Nigeria to achieve this.
* Alignment with UN Goals: Amotekun is recognized for contributing to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its 2030 peace and security vision.
* Acknowledged Successes: The UN has praised Amotekun’s achievements in reducing crime, supporting farmers, ensuring highway safety, and protecting lives and property in the Southwest.
